Learn about the Pelvic Laparoscopy

Pelvic laparoscopy is a medical surgery that helps to examine the pelvic organs using a viewing device called a laparoscope. It also helps to treat several diseases related to the pelvic organs.

What is the need for Pelvic Laparoscopy?

Pelvic laparoscopy can be used to examine and treat pelvic conditions affecting the fallopian tubes, uterus, ovaries and other organs in the pelvic region.

The doctor recommends this surgery due to the following reasons:

  • determine the causes of the chronic pelvic pain
  • investigate abnormalities like ovarian cysts, tissue masses, etc.
  • examine the fallopian tubes
  • causes of infertility or ectopic pregnancy
  • detect the degree of endometrial cancer, ovarian cancer or cervical cancer

How is Pelvic Laparoscopy performed?

A pelvic laparoscopy can be performed in an outpatient clinic or a hospital. Before the procedure, the doctor usually gives general anaesthesia. In other cases, the patient may get local anaesthesia to prevent feeling any pain in the pelvic region during the procedure.

The doctor makes a small incision around ½- an inch long above the navel once the anaesthetic dose takes effect. Then, a narrow tube-like tool called a cannula is placed in the abdominal cavity to enlarge it with pumped carbon dioxide. This opens a room for the doctor to operate with a clear view.

The laparoscopy is then inserted through the cut made near the navel. Again two to four dime-sized incisions are made closer to the pubic hairline to give space for extra cannulas and other instruments needed to perform the surgery. The doctor also inserts a uterine manipulator from the cervix to move the pelvic organs into the picture. The doctor removes the instruments and gas from the body and closes the incisions after completing the surgery by stitching and placing bandages over them.

What are the risks of a pelvic laparoscopy?

The most common risks of a pelvic laparoscopy include:

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Infection
  • Fever
  • Swelling, bleeding, redness or drainage at the incision sites
  • Breathing problem
  • Vomiting or Nausea
