Lungs Cancer Treatment

Lung cancer is the extensive growth of cancerous cells in the lungs, especially along the lining of the air passages, and is a major cause of death among men and women. Broadly classified, there are two different types of lung cancers- small cell lung cancers (SCLC) and non-small cell lung cancers (NSCLC). The latter occurs more commonly in humans. Treatment varies with the kind of lung cancer. With such high lung cancer treatment cost in India, you need to find the best options to cater to all your needs. But before that, you need to understand the disease, the symptoms it shows, and the probable treatment methods that might be recommended.

Major Causes of Lung Cancer

Though anybody can be afflicted by lung cancer, certain activities or factors raises the risk of getting cancer in the lungs.

  • Smoking: About 90% of the cases of lung cancer among men and 80% of the cases among women are caused because of tobacco smoking. If you are smoking and drinking regularly, your chances of getting lung cancer are even higher. Even if you have quit smoking, your chances of getting lung cancer will be lower than a fellow smoker but much higher than a non-smoker.
  • Second-hand Smoke: Quite naturally, with so many smokers around us, the second most common cause of lung cancer is secondhand smoke. This includes the smoke coming out of a cigarette as well as the one exhaled by a smoker which carries the irritants into your system.
  • Past occurrences in the family.
  • Regular exposure to irritants such as arsenic, nickel, chromium, beryllium, asbestos, soot, and tar in workplaces or otherwise.
  • Exposure to radiation from sources like radiation therapy, medical imaging tests such as CT scans, and radon in home and workplace.
  • Air pollution.
  • HIV infection.

Symptoms of Lung Cancer

  • Chest pain.
  • Chronic coughing.
  • Troubled breathing.
  • Bloody sputum.
  • Hoarse throat.
  • Unnatural weight loss.
  • Troubled swallowing.
  • Swollen face or swollen veins in the neck.

Diagnosis of Lung cancer

Various tools are used by medical practitioners to find out the presence of lung cancer in your body.

  • Ask about your medical history and symptoms along with your family history.
  • Physical examinations.
  • Imaging of the chest through X-rays or CT scans.
  • Laboratory tests such as testing the blood in your sputum.
  • Biopsy of lungs.

Once lung cancer has been diagnosed, other tests are conducted to check the spread of cancer through the lungs and the body. This part is called staging and is used to determine the severity of the cancer growth. Knowledge of the type and stage of cancer allows the practitioner to determine the kind of treatment you should be put on.

Line of Treatment

Depending upon the type and stage of cancer, you may be advised one or several kinds of treatment. For most patients, current treatment procedures do not cure cancer altogether, though they may control it.

For SMLC Surgery, Chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, laser therapy, and endoscopic stent placement are the preferred method of treatment.

In addition to these techniques, targeted therapy using drugs, cryosurgery, photodynamic therapy, and electrocautery treatments are used to treat NSCLC.

Stay Days in Hospital

The amount of time you would have to spend in the hospital could range from a few days to several weeks.

Success Rate

Both SCLC and NSCLC are fatal. For NSCLC, if the cancer is localized there is a 63% success rate, 35% for regional, and 7% for the distant stage.

For SCLC stage 1 has a success rate of 54%, stage 2 at 35%, stage 3A at 10-15%, stage 3B at >5%, and stage 4 at >2%.
