All About Hysteroscopic Surgery

Hysteroscopy is a medical surgery that includes the procedure to look inside the uterus for diagnosis and treat the cause of excessive bleeding. The process uses a thin, narrow light and camera tube-like instrument called a hysteroscope that gets inserted into the vagina to inspect the cervix and the inside of the womb. The doctor examines the images inside the womb to monitor the conditions of the patient.

Who needs hysteroscopic surgery?

Women who are dealing with the following symptoms may need to undergo this surgical procedure:

  • Heavy period, abnormal vaginal bleeding
  • Repeated miscarriages or complications in getting pregnant
  • Post-menopausal bleeding
  • Non-cancerous growth in the womb such as polyps, fibroids and adhesions
  • Displaced intrauterine devices (IUDs)

How is the hysteroscopy done?

Before the procedure, the patient is given local anaesthesia to numb the cervix. During the surgery, the patient is asked to lie down on the exam table. The position of the legs should be in stirrups for the surgeon to perform the pelvic test.

The cervix will be dilated to insert the hysteroscope through the cervix and vagina inside the uterus. By using the hysteroscope, a liquid solution will be sent into the uterus. This will gently expand and clear mucus or blood present in the uterus. As a result, the surgeon can view the uterus, uterine lining along with fallopian tubes clearly.

After detecting abnormalities, surgical instruments will be inserted through the hysteroscope to remove irregular growths.

What is the total stay days in the hospital?

The doctor generally carries out a hysteroscopy on a day-case basis. This means that the patient need not have to stay overnight in the hospital. The whole procedure can take around 30 minutes.

Risks of a hysteroscopy

Although hysteroscopic surgery is usually extremely safe, there can be some complications like any other procedure. Some of these complications associated with hysteroscopic surgery include:

  • Infection
  • Abnormal bleeding
  • Effect of anaesthesia
  • Intrauterine scarring
  • Injury to the womb, cervix, bladder, bowel
  • Substance reaction used for uterus expansion
