Laparoscopic Uterine Suspension Surgery

Laparoscopic uterine suspension is an alternative vaginal hysterectomy surgical procedure performed on women to correct uterine prolapse. In this procedure, the surgeon does not remove the uterus. Besides, the uterus is protected with the help of a prolene mesh that acts like a new ligament.

Furthermore, it offers support to the uterus. This procedure is performed on women who develop prolapse of the uterus (womb). This operation is performed to correct uterine prolapse without removing the uterus.

Who needs this surgery?

Women who develop prolapse of the uterus need to undergo this procedure. It allows the patient to preserve the uterus and her fertility. Since vaginal surgery is not generally needed, there is less chance of a vagina shortening which commonly occurs with vaginal hysterectomy. As a result, there is less threat of successive sexual complications.

How is Laparoscopic uterine suspension performed?

The surgeon under general anaesthesia performs the Laparoscopic uterine suspension. The surgeon makes four small incisions on the abdomen to insert the laparoscope and the surgical instruments to operate.

With the use of a strip of permanent mesh, the surgeon lifts the uterus and holds it in the right place. The end of the mesh is nicely wrapped around the cervix, and the ligaments are present over the sacrum. The mesh is also covered with the skin layer inside the abdomen called the peritoneum, which reduces the risks of bowel friction to the mesh.

Eventually, there is a growth of new connective tissues into the mesh that makes a new stronger ligament. After that, this remains in the body permanently.

What complications are likely to happen to post this surgery?

The possible risks and complications after the surgery include:

  • Urinary retention
  • Damage to surrounding organs
  • Mesh exposure or extrusion
  • Pelvic pain
  • Urinary incontinence
  • Laparotomy
